Gentleme it,

Sir.

6. S. "Uckermark".

In reply to your communication of 25th inst., we have to stats that the cargo of needles, colours, etc. now et Lisbon was shipped

originally from Hemburg and would therefore be assumed to be of German origin. It was for decount of Messrs. Reuter, Brockelman and Company, Hong Kong and was in transit upon the outbreak of

war. The steamer was interned at Lisbon and the goods · came unde;

the control of the Portuguese Government.

.!

Our position in the metter is that our firm, whose Head Offic is at Hong Kong, were appointed officiel liquidators in the windf up of this German concern, in which capacity they have instructed

us to make enquiries with a view to the disposal of the cargo.

We have the honour to be,

E.J.A.

Sir.

Your obedient Servante,

(SGD.) ?.

With reference to your letter of the 27th Hay, addressed to the Department of Import Restrictions relative to certain cargo ex the German S.S. Uckermark now lying at Lisbon, I am directed by the Board of Trade to state that they will offer no objection, in view of their general licence of the 25th September, 1914, to the payment of any freight or other shipping charges which it may be necessary to pay in order to obtain the release of the cargo, nor will objection be offered, so far se the special legislation relating to trading with the enemy is concerned, to the goods being imported into this country.

As regards, however, the immort licence which will be required under the Prohibition of Import Proclamations, a further communication will be addressed to you from the Department of Import Restrictions.
